Simple Coffee and Cinnamon Soap Recipe
Description
This all natural coffee and cinnamon soap works great as a deodorizing hand soap bar. The ground coffee and ground cinnamon are excellent for scrubbing and exfoliating. This is a very dark soap but one of my favorites.
Ingredient List
32 ounces - Vegetable Shortening
11 ounces - Cold Coffee
4.1 ounces - Lye
3 ounces - Ground Coffee
2 tablespoon - Ground Cinnamon
2 tablespoon - Cinnamon Essential Oil
0.5 ounces - Clove Bud Essential Oil
Directions
Once you have all of the ingredients measured out, you can begin to prepare the soap. Please note that all measurements are made by weight, not be fluid measurement. All of the oils and the water must be measured on a scale accurate to 0.2 ounces.
- Begin by brewing the coffee with the coffee grounds and 11 ounces of distilled water. Set the coffee in the refrigerator to cool. Save the coffee grounds to add to the soap mixture at trace.
- Next, put the cold coffee into a glass or stainless steel bowl. Slowly add the lye into the coffee. I usually mix my lye and water outside to reduce the chance of breathing in the fumes. Be very careful with the lye crystals and with the lye/water mixture because both are highly corrosive.
- Stir the coffee/lye mixture until the lye has completely dissolved. The coffee/lye mixture should be warming and may even become hot. After all the lye is added, add the salt. Once the lye and salt have dissolved set the mixture aside in a safe place with a thermometer in it to measure the temperature.
- While the lye is cooling, you can now begin to heat vegetable shortening. You will heat the vegetable oil to exactly 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Keep an eye on the lye mixture. You need to keep the oil at approximately 110 degrees Fahrenheit until the lye mixture cools to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Once the lye mixture is at 110 degrees and the oil mixture is at 110 degrees you can combine the two mixtures.
- You must now stir the mixtures together until trace. If you hand stir the mixture will take about 15 to 40 minutes to trace. If you use a stick blender it will take less than 15 minutes to trace.
- Once the mixture has reached trace, add the coffee grounds, the cinnamon essential oil and clove bud essential oil.
- Stir for a few more minutes to even out the added ingredients, then pour into soap molds.
- Leave the soap in a covered mold for about 48 hours before removing and cutting.
